Beef Stew Casserole

I have a very old "Dollar Wise" Cookbook. This is an easy beef casserole dish that is great on cold winter nights:

2 pounds stew beef, cut into 1 inch cubes
2 tablespoons oil
2 large onions, sliced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 1/4 cups Corn Flakes or Wheaties, crushed
1 cup water
1 cup sour cream
1 large potatoes peeled and sliced thin
1 can cream of mushroom soup (I use either broccoli or asparagus, since I don't like mushroom)
1 1/4 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt

Heat oil in skillet until melted. Cook onion and meat until meat is brown and onion tender. Add the water, boil and then simmer for 50 minutes.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Pour beef into casserole and then layer the potatoes over the beef. Mix together the milk, soup, sour cream, salt and pepper and pour over potatoes. Sprinkle with cheese and corn flakes. Bake about 90 minutes.
