Aloha Friday #18

Each Friday, Kailani, over at http://www.islandlife808.com/ hosts a wonderful meme called Aloha Friday. It's the end of the week, a chance to relax and get ready for the weekend. To celebrate Aloha Friday, you ask a question and answer others' questions.

Next month, I'll be having a party/open house here. I expect about 100 people. I'd really like to make this as "green" as possible. What tips can you offer me on making this green? I'm looking for cooking tips, serving tips, plates and silverware tips etc.

Audrey :)

  1. Wow, I am still stunned at hosting a party let alone for 100 people. I have absolutely no idea, but look forward to other comments. SOrry I am of no help.

  2. To really keep it green and not use paper/plastic products...you may want to try a rental place. May not be as budget friendly, but will be better for the planet. Good luck!

  3. Good question! Nothing is coming to mind off the top of my head...I'll think on it and come back if I think of something.

  4. Last year I reviewed a company that specializes in recycled serving and dinnerware. If I can remember the name of the company, I'll forward the info over. :-)

  5. Have everyone bring their own cup. that way you will not have any plastic or Styrofoam to throw out. it also makes it easier for people to use less.

  6. Ask people to bring their own plate, cups and cutlery. Cloth napkins if you can.

  8. I keep several sets of plates, silverware, etc that I picked up cheap for when we have parties. They don't match, but it works for us. Of course we don't have anywhere near enough for 100 people. Maybe you could rent some or borrow from family and friends.

  10. Oh, I'm no good at being green. Although, I do try to be as much as I can. Maybe use paper or plastic cups and plates and leave out recycle containers for them and one for pop cans/bottles.

  11. Sometimes the 99 cent stores sell sets of 4-5 dishes for 99 cents. Maybe you could spend $40 and buy enough dishes for everyone!

  12. I was going to say avoid paper products but 100 people is a lot of dishes to wash. I don't know!

  13. Hmmm, I can only think to use recycled products or no disposable items.

  14. A new way would be. Instead of people bringing foods, they could bring their own plates and cups? but I think that would work better if it was a small gathering.

    2. keep recycle bins close by for disposal.

    3. Tell each person to keep their own cups throughout instead of throwing away over an dover again.

    4. Use cloth napkins instead of paper towels, which will make you do whole bunch of laundry.

    ....running blank now :)

  16. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I like the idea of getting some really inexpensive cups and plates. They could all match, look great and then you just keep them in a box for other parties.

    Good luck!

  17. wow, 100 people. That's a lot to not have paper/plastic. But green is green. Call a rental place for eating utensils and plates/cups. That's the best way.

    Recycle all your bottles/cans.

Gosh, I don't know what else. Maybe google 'green party ideas' lol.

  18. Finger foods...with toothpicks or kabob's no paper plates...clearance napkins? so you don't have to use paper, maybe check at a restaurant supply for a good deal. Good luck with your party. I hope you will post about it and how you kept it green so that we can read it!! Late aloha!!
